My Fukuoka cafe picks: Blue Bottle Tenjin by Kego Shrine, the Ohori Park Starbucks and Shiawase no Pancake. Blue Bottle was half full at 8:30 a.m.

If I had to pick three Fukuoka cafes worth a special trip, these are them. Blue Bottle Tenjin, which has a shrine for a back garden, is best right at opening, and I stopped at the Ohori Park Starbucks on the way to Fukuoka Tower. Shiawase no Pancake in Tenjin works as dessert after lunch. The two Tenjin cafes are within walking distance of each other.

I went to the Ohori Park Starbucks and Shiawase no Pancake with my mom in July 2024, and to Blue Bottle in August 2025 and again this September. I'm not someone who hunts down desserts, so I judged each one honestly on whether it's worth a wait.

Blue Bottle Coffee Fukuoka Tenjin

I wandered in on my way back to the hotel from Don Quijote Tenjin, and it turned out to be the biggest, best-looking Blue Bottle I've been to. Most of the others I'd visited were small or felt like office-district shops, but here Kego Shrine sits right behind the glass wall, and there's a separate door out to the shrine. At first glance it felt like a café inside a resort.

I went at 8:30 on a weekday morning, practically at opening, and it was already about half full. I was told that if you come a little later, there's nowhere to sit. You grab a reserved-seat sign from the entrance, put it on a table, and then order, so I did what everyone else was doing.

Most people at that hour were having brunch, with a salad at 1,212 yen and the bigger plates at 1,870 yen. For coffee, I took the staff's recommendation and had a hot Bella Donovan drip. I normally only drink iced Americanos, but it wasn't sharp and had an interesting aroma, so it suited me even though I don't like acidic coffee. It was a bigger cup than I expected, too.

The merch was over $14 for a single cup and 3,090 yen for an unusual glass, so I just looked. Afterward I walked around Kego Shrine, which is small enough to see in 10 minutes. If you're staying in Tenjin, go at opening time as a walk after breakfast.

Ohori Park Starbucks

Ohori Park sits right between Tenjin and Fukuoka Tower, so it's easy to fit in on a tower day. I'd heard the famous udon place in the park has a two-hour wait unless you're there at opening, so I skipped it and went to Starbucks instead. It's on the east side of the park, at three o'clock if the park were a clock.

The interior suits the park, and there's a lot of outdoor seating. There was no line at midday, but it was packed inside and hard to find a seat. It was a hot day, so everyone was after the indoor window seats, but once I sat down, trees partly blocked the view, so it's not worth holding out for the window.

The Love & Peach Frappuccino (700 yen) that most people were ordering had real chunks of peach and tasted different from the Starbucks drinks I'm used to back home. The yuzu citrus passion tea (540 yen) had little bits of yuzu peel in it, which I liked. A tall Americano was 475 yen.

The Fukuoka city mug was 2,600 yen and the tumbler 5,450 yen. The Japanese garden on the south side of the park is cheap to get into and well kept, so it's worth a look while you're there. At the Ohori Park Starbucks, take an outdoor seat over the window and order the seasonal drink.

Shiawase no Pancake Tenjin

The name means "happy pancake," and at the Osaka and Tokyo branches the lines are long enough that plenty of people never get in. I went to the Tenjin branch at 1 p.m. on a Friday and walked right in. Ring the bell at the second-floor entrance, and someone comes out to seat you.

Happy Pancake topped with ice cream at Shiawase no Pancake

The shop was smaller than I expected and felt like an old neighborhood café. There's an English menu, so ordering was easy, and they have savory dishes too. Pancakes are made after you order, so we waited about 20 minutes, and a sign said it can take up to 40 when orders back up. The kitchen is open, so you can watch them cook, and my mom, who came with me, said they must be really hard to make.

The Happy Pancake (1,380 yen) was startlingly thick and came with a scoop of ice cream. The texture was like a very soft sponge cake, and the fairly sweet ice cream went well with the plain pancake. Go easy on the maple syrup. Splitting one between two of us as dessert was just the right amount.

The staff were busy and didn't come across as very friendly, and honestly I'm not sure it's worth waiting in line for. If you're in Tenjin and there's no line, it's worth stopping in.

For Fukuoka cafes, Blue Bottle in the morning, Ohori Park at midday and Tenjin for an afternoon dessert fits easily into one day. After Ohori Park, carry on to Fukuoka Tower, and if you want more sweets in Tenjin, head to the Tenjin Underground Mall for RINGO apple pie.

FAQ

When should I go to Blue Bottle Fukuoka Tenjin to get a seat?
Go right at the 8 a.m. opening. On a weekday at 8:30 a.m. in August 2025 it was already about half full, and I heard seats go fast after that. Grab a reserved-seat sign at the entrance, put it on your table, then order.
Is it worth waiting for a window seat at the Ohori Park Starbucks?
Not really. Trees partly block the view from the windows, so it isn't as open as you'd expect. On a cool day, the outdoor seats are actually nicer.
Is there a wait at Shiawase no Pancake in Tenjin?
At 1 p.m. on a Friday in July 2024 I walked right in. Pancakes are made to order, though, so they take about 20 minutes, and a sign said up to 40 minutes when it's busy.
How much is the Fukuoka Starbucks city mug?
At the Ohori Park store in July 2024, the Fukuoka mug was 2,600 yen and the tumbler was 5,450 yen. A tall Americano was 475 yen.
