Keisei Skyliner — Fastest Way From Narita Airport to Tokyo

The Keisei Skyliner is a high-speed train connecting Narita International Airport (Chiba Prefecture, Japan) to Ueno Station in central Tokyo in about 40 minutes. All seats are reserved, and it runs at up to 160km/h.

I visit Tokyo 1–2 times a year. I took the NEX (Narita Express) on my first trip, then switched to the Skyliner. It's cheaper than NEX, and Ueno Station has great subway connections — so I've used the Skyliner exclusively since then.

Best combo: Skyliner from airport to city, limousine bus from city back to airport. This gives you speed on arrival and convenience on departure.

Skyliner vs NEX vs Limousine Bus

Three ways from Narita Airport to central Tokyo:

Recommended combo: Skyliner to the city, limousine bus back to the airport. Flight arrival times are unpredictable, but departure day timing is in your control.

Tickets

Booking on Klook is cheaper than buying at the counter. You don't choose the train time when purchasing — you select the train and seat at the kiosk on arrival.

Buying with a subway pass is a great combo. After arriving at Ueno, exchange your subway pass right away and start exploring.

No round-trip ticket exists. Buy two one-way tickets.

Terminal 3 Arrivals — Important

Budget airlines (Jeju Air, Peach, etc.) land at Narita Terminal 3. You can't board the Skyliner there — take the shuttle bus to Terminal 2 first.

Terminals 2 and 3 are close enough to walk, but the shuttle is easier with heavy luggage.

Terminal 1 and 2 arrivals can go directly downstairs to the train gates.

How to Exchange Tickets

Scan your Klook QR code at the kiosk to get a physical ticket. No need to visit the staffed counter.

• Step 1: At the T2 kiosk, switch to English/Korean → scan QR code
• Step 2: Select your train time (trains every 15–30 min)
• Step 3: Choose your seat — pick one with an empty neighbor
• Step 4: Collect physical ticket

The platform is right past the gate, so book the nearest departure. No need to buffer extra time.

How to Board

Insert your ticket into the yellow gate. The ticket comes out the other side — keep it. You need it to exit at Ueno Station.

The same platform serves orange rapid trains. Check the Skyliner car number markings on the floor before boarding. Signs are in Korean/English.

On the Train

• Seats: Spacious with fold-down tray tables
• Power: 110V outlet under the seat (bring a plug adapter)
• Wi-Fi: Free
• Restroom: Near car 5
• Luggage: Rack between cars + overhead shelf above seats

• Crowding: T1 passengers board first, but trains are usually half-full. Often an empty seat next to you

After Arriving at Ueno

Ueno Station connects to the Ginza, Hibiya, and Oedo subway lines — easy transfer to anywhere in Tokyo. You can also exchange your subway pass at the Ueno Station kiosk.

Insert your ticket at the exit gate — it's collected there.
